A bag of candy contains lots of colouring agents,additives and preservatives. Explaining why many mothers are very reluctant to give their children artifical confectionery. According to Guy Gallet of the Association of Belgian Candy Manufacturers Choprabisco, consumers ask for a natural products. That is why The Flemish Technological Advisory Centre for the Confectionary Industries (VLAZ) recently organised the seminar ‘Snoep-Goed’ (Candy is good). According to Frédéric Depypere of the faculty of bioscience engineering of Ghent University, two samples were presented there: a candy variety (based on alge and other plants) an alternative to gelatine and the natural colouring agents. Every Belgian consumes about 24 kg of candy annually, including chips and cookies. Our weakness for sweets takes up 6.5% of our food budget: 1,7 billion euros in 2005.
